Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of space.

The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.
