Colombian President Says 'I Shall Take Up Arms Again' if United States Invades.

The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have escalated the volume of their exchange, increasing strains between the two countries following US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs cocaine mills and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump remarked.

Escalating Tensions coupled with Claims

Talking to reporters on Sunday, the US president suggested analogous armed intervention against Bogotá, asserting the country is also "very ill" and “run by a sick man who likes making cocaine and distributing it to the United States."

Although Colombia is the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the trade.

A Frayed Relationship

This nation for decades served as a key ally of the US in the campaign against narcotics trade and benefited from cross-party backing from American politicians, yet ties have deteriorated dramatically after Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups like the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters laid down arms subsequent to a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Strong Answer

When asked if a military operation comparable to Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump replied: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised decades ago, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am neither an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments without knowledge. End the false accusations," he expressed in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. If they capture me, whom a large part of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the populace," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Leader

Petro spent a period in his early life as a member in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate that he never participated in combat. After demobilizing, he was involved in creating the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago subsequently becoming an influential politician. He was mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected president.

"I swore not to touch a gun ... but in defense of my country I shall resume the fight," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Opposition

Colombia's defense chief announced that the national leader's personal security had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump's stance, however, leaders spanning the political spectrum have rejected the threats of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Political and Economic Strains

Washington revoked Petro’s visa following he called on US military personnel to ignore any illegal orders. In October, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, his spouse and various associates.

Concurrently the US was building up its forces in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats against Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted strikes against vessels in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
