An extensive extended journey around the Australian Coast has been cancelled in the wake of the death of an elderly woman who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant island.

The passenger had been walking on the remote island with shipmates from the vessel, but broke off from the party for a pause. The vessel left without her and came back several hours later after the crew discovered the passenger was missing.

An extensive rescue mission found her person the next day.

Investigative bodies are investigating the incident, in coordination with law enforcement and the official investigator.

The CEO of the voyage organizer announced that guests and staff on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the rest of the cruise had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and earlier mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he added that passengers would be issued a full refund, and said the organization was working "to organize the homeward trips of the travelers via chartered flights".

Officials also issued an latest communication, and said they had "delivered a order to the Master" prohibiting any additional guests from boarding the liner.

The representative said that they would inspect the ship in the Australian city upon its coming back.

Timeline of Events

The vessel initially left the Australian port on October 24th, and was only 48 hours into the voyage at the point of the elderly woman's death. Lizard Island was the first stop on the journey.

Passengers on the ship - who usually pay large sums of currency to join the cruise - were transported there for a day trip with the choice of trekking or snorkelling.

Relatives Reaction

The offspring of the victim said that her family was "stunned and distressed that the vessel left the location after an scheduled tour without my mum".

In her statement, she portrayed her mother as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a participant of a bushwalking organization.

"According to scant facts we have been told, it looks that there was a lapse of care and common sense," she stated.

She further stated that she hoped the investigation would be able to determine what "the organization should have done that might have preserved Mother's life".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and mother became unwell on the uphill trek," she explained.

"They requested her to go back, unescorted. Then the ship left, seemingly without performing a passenger count.

"During some point in that chain of events, or not long after, mother died, without company."

Company Position

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive confirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with authorities to support their investigation".

He stated that the company was "extremely apologetic that this has happened" and had provided its complete assistance to the family.

The vessel caters for up to one hundred twenty passengers with 46 staff, according to official data. It was specifically designed to enter isolated areas of the Australian coastline and is equipped with "tenders" - small boats used to take passengers on day excursions.

Occurrences such as this are rare, and passenger vessels have systems to record which individuals are getting on or disembarking, according to industry experts.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] onboard just isn't an choice," one expert stated.
